The extravagances of superyacht owners came to the fore after Western nations sanctioned Russian oligarchs during the war in Ukraine. The sanctions are aimed at seizing trophies from oligarchs believed to have ties to the Kremlin, including yachts, private jets and luxury properties.
The superyacht worker writing in The Times also detailed the story of a crew who prepared fresh lobster every day for the owner of their yacht whether he was on board or not.
Separately, a superyacht captain told the Guardian that employees on board a wealthy Russian’s superyacht were forced to take polygraph tests to prove they had kept confidential information secret. Employees were also banned from taking photos or making drawings of the superyacht, the captain said.
Some oligarchs saw their yachts and private jets seized, while others scrambled to escape sanctions.
Last week, a Fijian high court issued an order to stop a Russian oligarch’s $325 million superyacht from leaving the island nation.
